New Zealand Greenshell™ Mussels are farmed in the unpolluted waters of the Marlborough Sounds – a beautiful, natural and unspoiled environment in the north of the South Island of NZ. This trademark allows marketing of green lipped mussels more as a food rather than as health supplements such as greenshell mussel powder or mussel oil extract.
After harvesting, the farmers who grow them will drive them to the port area of Picton, where companies who act as processors of the mussels will begin preparing them for whatever form they will be used. Some will be half-shelled (meaning part of the shell is removed for table appearances) or full-shelled (meaning only the flesh inside remains) ready to be used in recipes for restaurants all over the world.
The term is often associated with the Greenshell™ Mussel Cruises which are operated out of the town of Havelock during the summer months. Greenshell mussel cruises operate through the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds – home to some of the best mussel farms in the country. Whilst cruising, along the way, enjoying the taste of freshly steamed greenshell mussels and a glass of top New Zealand wine which is in line with typical local New Zealand hospitality.
